Foreign Policy, Part 2 – Jesus and the Centurion
Israel was called to treat foreigners with fairness, generosity, and inclusion while maintaining pure devotion to God with moral purity. Although Jesus came to fulfill the scriptures as the Jewish Messiah; the forgiveness, salvation and hope he offered was for all people (1 John 2:2).
The Centurion’s great faith amazed Jesus. His honest, humble, perceptive and Christ-centered request showed a faith that Jesus “had not seen in anyone in all of Israel”. Jesus also had a warning for those who were with him who thought they were ‘on the inside’. “Many will be thrown out into the darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.” This warning should be heeded by all who believe that they belong to the kingdom, we are deserving of heaven only when we choose faith in Him and accept of His forgiveness. On our own we are just as deserving of hell as any in this fallen world. God is great, not us, and He knows our hearts. Chose Him, choose faith, choose to be on the ‘inside’ of His love.
