Elders

Meet our Church Leadership Team

New Hope is led by a group of elders who oversee our staff and ministry teams. Our pastors are a part of the elder team and oversee the daily ministry activities.

Tim Gunderson

Senior Pastor

Pastor Tim hails from the U.P., graduated from Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary way back in 1986. He is married to Lynn, has 4 children, 5 grandchildren, and 2 dogs. His hobbies include golf, hunting and wandering the earth. He counts it a great privilege to be a pastor and to accompany people on the journey that God has laid out for them. He thinks New Hope is the greatest church family in the entire world - some say he's biased, but he doesn't think so. He's very grateful to be a part of what God is doing here.

Kyle Douglass

Associate Pastor

Kyle's favorite thing in the world is to help people grow in Christ through counseling and teaching. He also loves bicycles, DIY-anything, and woodworking. He grew up in Schoolcraft, MI, attended Western Michigan University for his undergrad and his Master's in Political Science and is pursuing his MDiv at Moody Theological Seminary. He and his wife Nicole have been passionately staying married since 2000 and have three hopelessly cute and talented daughters.

Lay Elders

To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 1 Peter 5:1-3

Dave Hinkel

Elder & Treasurer

Dave grew up in a state south of Ann Arbor, graduated from Grace College and has an MBA in Accounting. He has been blessed by God in his marriage to Cindy. They have four adult children, a flock of chickens and three mouse-hunters. Dave enjoys gardening and various athletic events. Dave works as a teacher at Mattawan High School, teaching students about economics, psychology and accounting. He became an elder in 2009, serves as the church treasurer and assists with special events and local ministries. The families of New Hope are characterized by these words of Jesus, “… everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Dave Johnson

Elder

Dave loves most everything about MI, and is glad his folks moved here from WI, so he could grow up a Tiger fan and not a cheese-head. He and Judith raised four boys, who they home-schooled up to high school. Grandkids Mady and Caden (via Pat / Kelli) are a vast source of delight. He has a passion to both listen to and play a wide variety of music (drums, trumpet). He also enjoys writing, golfing, long walks, and offbeat humor :-) He feels incredibly blessed and privileged to serve as elder for the New Hope body, whom he's continually amazed and edified by. He retired from AT&T in 2009, and likes to be involved in small group fellowship and Bible studies.

Dieter Neu

Elder

Dieter loves praying for the sick and watching the workings of the Holy Spirit. He is married to the love of his life, Helga, and they have a son who lives in Schererville, IN. He loves the outdoors and spends lots of time in the woods cutting and clearing the landscape at the back of his property in Cass County, MI. He loves spending time with his Doberman "Bella". Dieter is one of the founding elders.

Dave Sporer

Elder

Dave has been a believer since the early days when he spent summers in the UP with his grandparents. There he learned to love God, the lakes, and the Green Bay Packers. On any given day, you can still hear him say, "go pack go"!! Dave has worked in healthcare in the field of orthopedics most of his adult life. One of his proudest professional memories is working side-by-side with Homer Stryker. Dave has served on orthopedic boards at both the state and national levels. One of the biggest joy's other than serving the Lord, comes from his three grandchildren, Finn, Matthew, and Katelynn. Dave and Kathy are blessed by their New Hope family, many friends and family all brothers and sisters in the Lord.

Greg is originally from Nebraska, and now lives in Paw Paw, MI. He is married to Jen and they have two children, Audrey and Calvin. He attended Wheaton College as an undergrad and the University of Nebraska for graduate school. He works in Research and Development for Zoetis Inc., which is an Animal Health company. In the fall of 2016, he and his wife joined the “empty-nester” club and treasure witnessing God’s handiwork together on Lake Cora.

Al Lallinger

Elder Emeritus

Al was among the founding Elders of our church. His interests include woodworking and stained glass. In fact he created the stained glass windows that grace our church building!

Mike Thompson

Elder Emeritus

Mike was among the founding Elders of our church. He was a school teacher, an athlete, and many would agree an orator and a wordsmith. He was a dear friend, husband, father, grandfather and mentor. We praise God that he has joined that great cloud of witnesses but we greatly miss him nonetheless.
